Thailand Cautions Cambodia: Border Dispute Could Impact Regional Economic Relations

by admin477351

Efforts to mend the diplomatic relationship between Thailand and Cambodia could face setbacks if border disputes are continually brought to international attention, Thailand has cautioned. Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow expressed concern that persistent allegations against Thailand in global forums may jeopardize the mutual trust-building initiatives between the two neighboring countries.

The warning came after Keo Chhea, Cambodia’s ambassador to the United Nations, highlighted humanitarian issues stemming from past border conflicts during a UN Security Council meeting. He pointed to the significant civilian displacement, destruction of homes and infrastructure, and the damage to the Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as consequences of earlier clashes between the nations.

Thailand responded by describing Cambodia’s remarks as one-sided and inconsistent with a joint agreement signed in late 2025. This agreement was intended to foster reconciliation and rebuild confidence between the countries. Thai officials underscored the importance of adhering to the spirit of this agreement to maintain positive bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, Cambodian government spokesperson Pen Bona reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to peaceful dialogue, adherence to international law, and existing ceasefire agreements as means to address and resolve ongoing border disputes. This stance underscores Cambodia’s preference for diplomacy over discord in handling the complex border issues.

The historical border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been a recurring source of strain in their bilateral relations, particularly in the contentious areas surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple. The ongoing dialogue and efforts to resolve these disputes highlight the delicate balance both countries strive to maintain in fostering a peaceful and cooperative relationship.
