Cambodia’s Economic Growth Slows Amid Rising Pressures, World Bank Reports

Cambodia is encountering significant economic hurdles despite drawing over $5 billion in foreign direct investment in 2025, as highlighted by a recent World Bank evaluation. Although this influx of foreign capital has played a critical role in stabilizing the economy and facilitating the creation of approximately 400,000 jobs, several factors are straining growth. Escalating fuel prices, mounting inflation, and a deceleration in the construction industry are among the key pressures.

Inflation surged to nearly 6 percent in April, leading to higher prices for essential commodities, which disproportionately impacts low-income households. The report cautioned that a 10 percent hike in fuel prices could exacerbate poverty rates, and the sluggish performance in the housing and construction sectors continues to be a drag on economic momentum. These challenges are compounded by the repatriation of around 500,000 Cambodian migrant workers from Thailand, which has led to a decline in remittances, a crucial support for many families.

The World Bank projects that Cambodia’s GDP will expand by 3.9 percent in 2026, with expectations of a rebound to 4.9 percent growth in 2027. To mitigate economic vulnerabilities, the institution suggests a series of strategic interventions. These include safeguarding livelihoods, driving job creation, accelerating structural reforms, enhancing governance, and boosting productivity. In addition, the World Bank proposes lowering fuel taxes, ensuring the timely importation of fertilizers for farmers, and bolstering domestic revenue streams to enhance expenditure on healthcare, education, and social services.

Addressing the immediate needs of citizens, the report underscores the importance of maintaining household incomes and enabling individuals to cope with daily living expenses. As policymakers navigate these economic challenges, prioritizing the population’s ability to meet essential costs should remain at the forefront of their agenda. By implementing these recommendations, Cambodia can better position itself to weather current economic headwinds and lay the groundwork for a more robust recovery.
