UN Secretary-General Urges Permanent Gaza Ceasefire and Political Solution

by admin477351

As the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel approaches, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The attack, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals, also involved the taking of 251 hostages. Guterres condemned the violence and urged for a lasting political solution while emphasizing the need to expand humanitarian assistance and uphold international law.

The ongoing conflict has had a devastating impact on both sides, with Gaza health authorities reporting over 74,200 Palestinian deaths due to Israel’s military operations in the territory. Guterres highlighted the significant loss of life, displacement, and destruction experienced in Gaza, stressing the urgency for renewed efforts to establish conditions where Israelis and Palestinians can live with security and dignity.

A ceasefire announced in October 2025 provided some relief, but Guterres noted it has yet to deliver lasting security or a credible path towards recovery and peace. He called for an end to the suffering of both peoples, urging the international community to support efforts aimed at achieving a durable solution to the conflict.

The Secretary-General’s appeal comes as tensions remain high in the region, with both sides continuing to experience the humanitarian and security consequences of ongoing hostilities. Guterres’s call underscores the need for comprehensive dialogue and cooperation to address the root causes of the conflict and pave the way for a peaceful resolution.
