In the wake of catastrophic floods and landslides in Nepal, Malaysia is preparing to dispatch DNA specialists to aid in identifying victims. The deployment is pending approval from the Nepalese government, with Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan noting that the team is ready to commence DNA identification once search and rescue operations are concluded. These experts are tasked with matching DNA samples from the bodies recovered with those provided by the families of Malaysian citizens who are still missing.
Efforts are already underway in Malaysia, where DNA samples have been collected from the relatives of 55 Malaysians who have yet to be accounted for in the aftermath of the disasters. The urgency of the situation has necessitated the rapid burial of some bodies due to limited facilities, underscoring the critical role DNA testing will play in ensuring accurate identification.
The Malaysian team, which is composed of 11 members, will be equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue equipment. This includes advanced detection tools, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized tunnel-rescue apparatus. Additionally, they are bringing along a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to bolster their operational capabilities in the challenging terrain.
By combining search and rescue efforts with DNA identification, Malaysia aims to not only locate the missing but also provide closure for families anxiously awaiting news about their loved ones. The comprehensive approach reflects a commitment to addressing the immediate needs of the victims while ensuring that their families receive definitive confirmation regarding their fate.
