Iran has leveled accusations against Qatar, claiming that the Gulf nation is hindering investigations into the disappearance of three Iranian pilots amidst recent regional conflict. Tehran insists that these pilots are unaccounted for, while Qatar refutes the allegations, denying any knowledge of the pilots’ whereabouts. Iranian military official Mohammad Bagherzadeh has expressed frustration over the prolonged delay, stating that an expert team from the Iranian Air Force has been awaiting clearance to enter Qatar for months to probe the situation. He urged Qatari authorities to grant access urgently and called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene.
In a related development, Iran previously reported the retrieval of Major Majid Kazemi’s body, one of the pilots who perished in an incident linked to the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base situated in Qatar. Meanwhile, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, has firmly dismissed claims of the Iranian pilots being detained in Qatar. According to Al-Ansari, the pilots allegedly breached Qatari airspace, prompting Qatar to undertake defensive actions after receiving no response to their communication attempts.
Qatari authorities assert that their search and rescue operations were deployed to locate the missing pilots and any remains. They further claim to have collaborated with Iran regarding the transfer of one recovered pilot’s remains. Additionally, Qatar maintains that in April, Iranian officials were invited to dispatch a team to Qatar to access detailed information about the search and rescue efforts, but they have yet to receive a response from Iran.
