Jakarta and New York are currently in discussions about a potential visit by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to the Indonesian capital. This follows a recent meeting between Mamdani and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung in New York, where they explored shared urban challenges.

During their meeting at the U20 Mayors Summit 2026, both leaders delved into issues such as public transportation, traffic congestion, flooding, air pollution, and financing for urban development. These discussions highlighted the common hurdles faced by both metropolises and the opportunities for collaboration.

Mayor Mamdani showed a keen interest in Jakarta’s strategies to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance public transportation. Governor Pramono showcased the ongoing development of Transjabodetabek, a transportation network aimed at connecting Jakarta with nearby cities and regions, as a significant step in this direction.

Additionally, the conversation extended to municipal financing strategies. Pramono introduced Jakarta’s plans to issue municipal bonds, known as Jakarta Bonds, to fund infrastructure and development projects. In response, Mamdani proposed facilitating cooperation between the finance teams of the two cities to exchange knowledge on municipal bond issuance.

While the prospect of Mayor Mamdani’s visit to Jakarta remains in early discussion stages, Governor Pramono confirmed that no final decisions have been made yet. The visit, tentatively linked to a conference in late October, will be officially announced once plans are solidified.
