Malaysia Increases Electricity Subsidy Limit, Impacting Business Energy Costs

by admin477351

Amid rising living costs exacerbated by increased electricity usage during hot and hazy weather, Malaysia has taken steps to ease the financial burden on households. The government has announced a significant adjustment to its electricity subsidy scheme, raising the threshold for subsidized monthly electricity consumption from 600kWh to 800kWh. This change, effective immediately, aims to provide relief to domestic users grappling with higher energy bills.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim revealed that the revised threshold will remain in place until December 31. Under this new policy, households consuming up to 800kWh of electricity per month will be exempt from the Automatic Fuel Cost Adjustment (AFA), as well as applicable retail charges and the Sales and Service Tax (SST). This move is designed to make energy more affordable for a larger segment of the population during this period of increased demand.

Introduced in July 2025, the AFA mechanism adjusts monthly electricity charges based on fuel prices, potentially leading to rebates or additional costs for consumers. By temporarily lifting the AFA for a broader range of users, the government seeks to align electricity tariff policies with both affordability for households and the broader goal of supply security while ensuring the energy sector’s sustainability over the long term, according to Prime Minister Anwar.

The government has pledged to continue monitoring fuel prices and energy market conditions closely. This vigilance is crucial to maintaining a balance between consumer needs and the health of the energy sector, ensuring that policies remain responsive to market fluctuations and the economic environment.
