Indonesia has underscored its dedication to participating in global artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives by becoming a founding member of the newly established World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO). This development emerged from discussions between Indonesia’s Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Hartarto highlighted Indonesia’s commitment to establishing an AI governance framework that emphasizes equitable development, innovation centered around human needs, respect for national sovereignty, and adherence to United Nations principles, all within an inclusive multilateral setting.
In an effort to strengthen its role within WAICO, Indonesia has expressed interest in securing a senior position in the organization’s secretariat. Furthermore, Hartarto advocated for enhanced collaboration with China in the fields of artificial intelligence, investment, and trade. He emphasized the need for expedited market access for Indonesian exports and extended an invitation to Chinese companies to increase their investments in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and industrial parks within Indonesia.
Minister Airlangga Hartarto also conveyed Indonesia’s support for China’s upcoming chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2026. He proposed the organization of a bilateral business summit to coincide with a scheduled meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This summit is intended to further deepen economic ties between the two nations.
These initiatives reflect Indonesia’s strategic approach to positioning itself within the global AI landscape and enhancing economic cooperation with China. By aligning with WAICO and advocating for closer ties with China, Indonesia aims to foster an environment of innovation and growth that benefits both domestic and international stakeholders.
