In a bid to strengthen economic ties and promote financial independence among BRICS nations, Russian President Vladimir Putin has put forward a proposal for a collaborative grain market and a new insurance mechanism. During the BRICS outreach session, Putin emphasized the need for member countries to develop independent systems for capital, labor, and technology exchange, aiming to reduce susceptibility to external pressures.
Putin highlighted the existence of independent routes for capital, labor, and technology movement, suggesting that Russia’s new insurance mechanism and grain market model could be adopted by other BRICS nations. This comes amidst ongoing Western sanctions and restrictions which have impacted Russian energy exports. Specifically, the European Union, G7, and UK have limited Western companies from providing insurance for vessels transporting Russian oil unless these shipments adhere to set price-cap conditions.
The Russian leader also commended the efforts of the New Development Bank, a financial institution established by BRICS countries, underscoring its role in enhancing financial cooperation among emerging economies. He advocated for a comprehensive approach to tackling global challenges, urging BRICS countries to address not only the immediate impacts but also the root causes of international crises.
Furthermore, Putin called on countries from the Global South to collaborate in reforming global governance structures and tackling both traditional and emerging security issues. He noted that the increasing interest and participation in BRICS highlight the group’s growing influence and its commitment to fostering an independent stance on global economic and political matters.
