Indonesian Stocks Rise 1.7% Amid New Market Regulations and Investor Caution

by admin477351

Indonesian stocks experienced a significant rebound on Tuesday, with the Jakarta Composite Index climbing 1.7% to surpass the 5,000 mark. This recovery follows a three-day downturn that had brought the index below 4,900. The bounce-back can be attributed to investors reassessing new market regulations and the looming threat of Indonesia being downgraded to standalone market status by MSCI.

The positive shift in the market saw the index gaining approximately 88 points in early trading. This was largely driven by investor reactions to recent measures introduced by the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) aimed at enhancing market transparency. Notably, the IDX has reduced the lower trading limit for stocks from 15% to 7% in an effort to mitigate sharp price declines. Despite these efforts, market volatility persisted, with a slight majority of stocks declining over those advancing in early trade.

In addition to the trading limit adjustment, the IDX is considering changes to regulations affecting stocks with highly concentrated share ownership. These proposed changes are part of an effort to improve market transparency and integrity, aligning Indonesia’s practices more closely with international standards. However, these initiatives do not guarantee a favorable response from MSCI, which remains a point of concern for investors.

Analysts caution that the Jakarta Composite Index may continue to face challenges if selling persists among large-cap stocks, identifying a potential support range between 4,800 and 4,900. A sustained recovery in major stocks could help maintain the index above the 5,000 level. Additionally, changes in the index’s composition might increase the influence of major banking stocks, making their performance and foreign investment flows even more critical to the broader market’s health.

Globally, market sentiment remains mixed. Technology stocks have shown signs of recovery as investors become more discerning in their artificial intelligence investments. However, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are contributing to sustained high oil prices, adding to the uncertainty in global markets.
